Arrested Nigerian gays disappear in custody
The Nigerian government Thursday launched an inquiry into the disappearance from police custody of two gay men charged under the country's "crimes against nature" law. The men, Ogudu Emmanuel and Odjegba Tevin, were taken to the Rumuokoro Police Station in January after acknowledging that they were partners. The men disappeared from the jail. Some say they escaped; some say they were murdered. Judge dismisses charges against Philadelphia homophobes
In Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, Common Pleas Judge Pamela Dembe dismissed all charges today against the homophobic protesters who picketed at Gay Pride. Dembe, who watched a video of the events leading to the arrests, tossed the charges saying they didn't threaten anyone and didn't incite violence as prosecutors claimed. "We are one of the very few countries that protect unpopular speech. And that means that Nazis can March in Skokie, Ill. ... Stripper who killed drag queen Brazon with samurai sword will stand trial
The man accused of killing Gary McMurtry with a samurai sword will stand trial now that a judge has decided he's competent to do so. McMurtry, perhaps better known as Brazon (shown), a drag queen who once wore the crown of Miss Gay Columbus and Miss Gay Ohio, was found dead in his home in May 2002. Police reports say a masked Jennings, a stripper who danced during Brazon's shows, broke into McMurtry's home and stabbed him. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, part of Health and Human Services, made organizers of an upcoming conference change the name of a session called "Suicide Prevention Among Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Individuals." Too queer. It's now called "Suicide Prevention Among Vulnerable Populations," but the panelists aren't too happy about it. The feds are perfectly willing to fund religion, however. Jeffrey Landrigan, an Arizona inmate who murdered two men including a gay man he picked up when he escaped from prison, won a reprieve when a federal appeals court set aside its original decision that Landrigan should die for his crimes. In Moscow today the federal Supreme Court refused to amend Russia's Family Code and authorize same-sex marriages. State Assembly-member Edward Murzin's complaint brought the issue to the forefront. Murzin (shown right) demanded Family Code clauses 1 and 12 amended. The court ruled that amending the acting legislation is outside the scope of the court and dismissed it. Abubakar Hamza became a celebrity in northern Nigeria when he was arrested for pretending to be female. Sentenced to six months in prison and fined $38, Judge Lawal Isa Rabo told him, "It is hoped that you have learned some lessons during your trial and I hope you will be of good character and desist from this immoral behavior of posing as a woman." Republicans have announced that they're abandoning their gay marriage ban plan this year. John Nelson, president of the American Medical Association, says New York Medical College's decision to ban a gay students group from campus is an effort to uphold its standards. He likened it to Brigham Young University's decisions to ban Coca-Cola from campus and to suspend four athletes accused of raping a 17-year-old girl. Yeah, it's just like that. Nelson said doctors should treat gays "with dignity, with respect and with absolute confidentiality" and said the AMA would be concerned if New York Medical College were graduating students "with clinical biases that might affect the way they practice medicine." Officer Charles Broshous resigned after 100 photos he had taken of barely clad men were found in his home in Colorado Springs. A gay dancer reported to police that he had been arrested and was forced to strip to a satin leopard G-string while Officer Broshous photographed him. Investigating detective Derek Graham said, "The fact that photographs would be taken of suspects, all of whom were of the same age group and athletic build with their shirts off, indicated that Officer Broshous was intentionally contacting individuals sharing these characteristics in order to photograph them.'' Armed with protest placards and heart-shaped balloons, Jeanne Marshall and Brenda Miller stepped into Norwich, Connecticut, City Hall on Monday resigned to the notion they would not be leaving with what they came for. It kind of takes the fun out of Valentine's Day, said Miller as she climbed the stairs toward the city clerk's office on the second floor. In Leeds, a UK jury heard the testimony of a teenage girl, who said she was raped by a man dressed as a woman who followed her in the early morning hours. The 16-year-old said she was approached and asked the time by a woman with long blonde hair who later grabbed her, dragged her into an alley and raped her. Gary Atack was arrested and women's clothing was found in his home. He admitted he had been out that night dressed as a woman, but said he didn't sexually assault anybody. Atack later explained he got turned on by people urinating in front of each other and on the night in question he urinated in front of the girl. Gay autistic savant Daniel Tammet is amazing
Daniel Tammet set a new British and European record not long ago by reciting the mathematical expression pi to more than 22,000 decimal places. Tammet, 25, connects his unique mental abilities to epileptic seizures he had as a child. While learning the number was "actually rather easy," Tammet is recognized as a "savant" - one of a small group of people capable of extraordinary mental feats linked to a medical condition. Thousands of same-sex couples flood U.S. marriage bureaus for licenses
The Reverend Troy D. Perry (shown right) called again for thousands of same-sex couples to flood marriage bureaus today to apply for marriage licenses, drawing attention to the lack of marriage rights for gays and lesbians. Perry and his husband, Phillip DeBleck (shown left), filed the California lawsuit asking the state to recognize their Canadian marriage. They're returning to the courthouse today amidst speculation that the Superior Court in San Francisco might issue its ruling today. Melissa Etheridge proved at the Grammy Awards last night that losing her hair to chemotherapy may have only made her voice better.
