Arrested Nigerian gays disappear in custody

The Nigerian government Thursday launched an inquiry into the disappearance from police custody of two gay men charged under the country's "crimes against nature" law. The men, Ogudu Emmanuel and Odjegba Tevin, were taken to the Rumuokoro Police Station in January after acknowledging that they were partners. The men disappeared from the jail. Some say they escaped; some say they were murdered. Being gay is punishable in most of Nigeria by a 14-year prison sentence, except in the Sharia Code portions of the nation, where there is a death penalty.
