Kennedy nixes transgender language from Senate hate crimes bill I've told you about the Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2005. Now ninety-six members of the House have signed on to co-sponsor the bill that protects all of us. It's so great, but Senators Edward Kennedy (pictured) and Gordon Smith (an Oregon Republican) introduced a Senate version of the bill that very same day that was overshadowed, and it omits the gender identity language. While I'd expect that of a Republican, I expect more from Kennedy. They believe the issue is covered in their language that reads "perceived sexual orientation or gender," but truthfully, it needs to be spelled out to make certain that judges and prosecutors get the picture that transgendered people are covered under the legislation. �
