Spanish Gays Abused During Franco Regime Could Get Monetary Compensation
Spain is considering financially compensating gay men who suffered years of abuse due to their sexual orientation.
The Washington Times reports that men like Antoni Ruiz, who was imprisoned after revealing he was gay, may soon be awarded a one-time payment of nearly $16,000 and receive a monthly pension.
“I spent three months in prison,” Ruiz said of the abuse he suffered due to his sexual orientation, reports the Times. “I was raped there and in the police cells and psychologically tortured by both the guards and the prison doctor.”
In order to garner compensation for himself and others like him who suffered through abuse and were unable to work during dictator Francisco Franco’s rule, Ruiz became president of the Association of Ex-Social Prisoners, The Independent said.
The Times reports that Ruiz said the possible approval of the compensation, that would include a pension of more than $1,000 a month, could mark an official recognition of the atrocities.
“This is not just about economic compensation but remembering homosexuals who suffered under unjust and dictatorial laws,” he said, reports the Times.
During Franco’s homophobic dictatorship, gays were jailed or locked up in sinister mental institutions known as “correction camps”. With echoes of the Nazi atrocities against gays, they were given electric shocks in the belief that this would rid them of their homosexual urges. Inmates were forced to watch pornographic films featuring women in an effort to show them a sex life that was deemed “natural” by the conservative authorities.
As part of their nationalist, Catholic ideals, the Franco regime and its Falangist supporters considered homosexuals a threat to the “macho” Spanish male.
General Queipo del Llano, who broadcast to the nation, once said: “Any effeminate or introvert who insults the movement will be killed like a dog.”
The most famous gay man killed by the regime was the poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, who wrote Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. Considered a subversive, he was executed by a Nationalist firing squad in Granada in 1936.
Homosexuality was designated as an offence under the “law against delinquency and criminals” introduced in 1954. But towards the end of Franco’s regime, it was increasingly viewed as an illness rather than a crime. According to the Independent, in 1968, the psychologist Lopez Ibor said: “Homosexuals should be seen more as sick people than as criminals. But the law should still prevent them proselytising in schools, sports clubs and army barracks.” Jail terms of up to three years were imposed under laws covering “public scandal” or “social danger”.

Gay Torchwood Actor John Barrowman gets married
John Barrowman (Scottish-American actor ) tied the knot with Scott Gill, his partner of 16 years, in a civil partnership ceremony yesterday St David’s Hotel and Spa in Cardiff Bay, Wales. Approximately forty friends and family witnessed the event, according to reports.
Barrowman stars as Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.
There was no comment from the couple, but Barrowman has commented previously on his intention to have his relationship legally recognized: “Our relationship was legitimate for us a long time ago. We have been spending most of our time together. The ceremony is because we have the right to be recognised as a couple. It forces people who don’t want to recognise same-sex relationships as legitimate, it forces them to do so.”
Barrowman wore a kilt to the ceremony in honor of his Scottish roots. Although raised in Joliet, Illinois, he was born in Glasgow.
Best wishes to the happy couple.

Wentworth Miller at Arq????
You may have noticed Wentworth Miller wandering down Oxford Street this week, as he is in town promoting Prison Break. After the harbour CRUISE Wentworth is heading down to Melbourne to visit his sister. Who knows he may enjoy a post cruise dance at Arq?
So the Prison Break star, in town on a promotional tour, can be forgiven for calling it a blend between civilisation and wilderness.
“I wish I could stay longer,” Miller said in Sydney. “My impression (of Australia) is … this cool civilisation sort of perched on the edge of shark-infested waters and scorpion-filled deserts. It’s got this great kind of mixture between civilisation and wilderness.”
Already given the full tourist treatment, Miller has travelled Victoria’s Great Ocean Rd, spotted koalas and cruised Sydney Harbour on a whirlwind visit to the nation’s two biggest cities. But the hunky star refused to enter the traditional debate over which city gets his vote.
“I was in Melbourne for three days,” he said. “I didn’t really stay long enough in either one to make an assessment.”
Miller said he’d formed a strong relationship with his on-screen brother, Aussie actor Dominic Purcell, who left Perth to make his home in Los Angeles.
“If you don’t buy that there’s that fraternal bond, which is central to the story, the whole thing falls apart,” he said.
“He’s like every kid’s fantasy of what every big brother should be. Tall, big, large and willing to kick arse if necessary.”
Prison Break; Season Two will be back on Channel Seven in coming next year.

Robbies been partying with pop duo the PET SHOP BOYS, despite playing down rumours he is homosexual. The ANGELS singer has flirted with homosexuality in the past but insists he only has eyes for women, despite constant speculation to the contrary. Williams loves visiting London’s top gay nightspots with the GO WEST hitmakers, because the gay community is totally accepting of him. He says, “We go to Heaven nightclub and I f**kin’ love it - it’s great. They enjoy seeing it through my eyes, I think, and I enjoy being with them and being accepted.”
Robbie is afraid he will remain single forever, because no girl can ever live up to his ideal woman *Madonna*
“She’s Madonna” from his new album Rudebox is a collaboration between Robbie and the Pet Shop Boys. Robbie says he wrote the song after seeing Madonna perform at last year’s MTV Europe awards. During the summer Robbie was accused of stealing a song by Rod Stewart’s stepson. Ashley Hamilton, claimed that he worked with Robbie on the new single “She’s Madonna” before the singer asked the Pet Shop Boys to finish the track. The album release could be delay to avoid another legal action from former Take That manager who thinks lyrics in the song The 90s, are defamatory to him …

Gay Jehovah’s Witness doctrine “disfellowshipped”…
In Montana the fate of Jacob and Joshua Miller, the identical twins who practice the faith and whose band Nemesis was followed this season in a LOGO reality show. The outcome was, well, what you might expect, according to a statement released by the brothers:
According to (those extremely annoying door knocking) Jehovah’s Witness doctrine, being “disfellowshipped” means that we have been found guilty of unrepentant gross misconduct. Our immediate family is to have limited or no contact with us. And all other practicing Jehovah’s Witnesses around the world are not to speak with us ever again.
Although we are no longer Jehovah’s Witnesses, we have nothing but love for those individuals who have been asked to shun us. We will continue to be in contact with our family and those who truly love us unconditionally as long as they’re willing.
We find it ironic that a religion whose members are asked to knock on the doors of strangers with a message of acceptance into paradise on Earth will not accept two of its own children for who they really are. Our wish for them is one of tolerance and understanding and we send to all of them a message of peace and love.”
Another great example of how organized religion can be buckets of fun, love, and inclusion.

David Beckham has put a huge price on his famously honed body and chiselled good looks. The world’s highest-paid footballer has insured himself for £100 million - the biggest ever policy taken out in sport, and only rivalled by the likes of showbiz superstars Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey.
Former England captain David, who has six months of his contract left at Real Madrid, is thought to have struck the insurance deal across six different firms because of the huge sum involved. It will cover him in the event of injury, disfigurement and serious illness, but only if he steers clear of high risk activities like surfing or rock climbing.
The 31-year-old striker, who is currently on £100,000 a week at Real Madrid, is expected to be offered a new two-year deal to remain at the Spanish club. But 15 other clubs, including Inter Milan, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur have all been inquiring about his availability - proving he’s still considered one of the biggest talents in the sport.
Insuring one’s body is nothing new in celebsville. Michael Flatley insured his legs for £25 million, while Ken Dodd’s teeth are covered for a cool £4 million. Meanwhile Bruce Springsteen took out insurance to cover his legendary rock’n’roll growl to the tune of £3.5 million.

The deliciously bad, pre-fab pop quintet known as the Spice Girls are rumored to be fishing the ol’ latex platforms and getting back together. ContactMusic.com, you better not be teasing me with this info:
The Princess Diana’s tribute concert could provide the impetus for a Spice Girls reunion, according to Baby Spice herself. Emma Bunton told the Sunday Mirror that she would love it for the five girls to get back together for a special performance at the Concert for Diana. Although rumours of a reunion of Baby, Posh, Sporty, Scary and Ginger - aka Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Mel C, Mel B and Geri Halliwell - have cropped up on numerous occasions, none of them have resulted in a get-together. “I would love to do something with the girls again. And it would be great to sing at Princess Diana’s concert,” Emma said. “We were very close to doing Live8 but Mel B was working and couldn’t get out of it.”
What the hell was Mel B so busy doing? NOT getting pregnant with Eddie Murphy’s baby?

All day I’ve been trying to figure out what bothers me so much about this picture of Brad Pitt gearing up for a little motorcycle ride in LA this weekend. The best I’ve got is that his highlighted hair is veering dangerously into douche donkey territory, but I can’t help the nagging feeling that there is something else wrong with this picture…any thoughts?

Lace Bass’ partner, Amazing Race reality TV star Reichen Lehmkuhl, has blogged on his myspace about Perez Hilton’s claims that he’s been cheating on Lance. He says he and Lance are still together, and that Perez makes shit up to increase his traffic:
All,
From the Horse’s Mouth: Just a friendly reminder that when you read websites like PerezHilton.com, you are reading lies and are being taken advantage of as you make more money for a person who does nothing but fabricate stories to make his site look interesting.
That anyone would trust someone like Mario Lavendeira (PerezHilton.com) who STEALS from photographers, bloggers, and the general population, is beyond me, really. This person is a common criminal.
Contrary to what this ugly wind-bag has reported, I have not broken up with my boyfriend. I did not go home with anyone from “Survivor” from any party. I have not “made out with” anyone at a party while I have been with my boyfriend. The opposite has been written on his site. It is all a complete and blantant lie. This person is a liar. Period.
My book was done before I ever met Lance. I do not date people so that I can “use” them. I’m self-sufficient and happy to be that way. I have served my country, I have made my own money, my own career, written my own books, bought my own homes and other possesions, and I’m proud to be this way, on my own. I am not broke. I am individually financially sound. I date people because I happen to love them. Period.
I will only post this once. This disgusting person and his site makes up blatant lies to create interesting stories. I am one of this criminal’s targets. Understand that. So know, from here on out, that if you read anything about ME on PerezHilton.com, you are 99.9% sure to be reading a lie or an exagerrated, incorrect version of something that is 0.01% true.
Merry Christmas Everybody!!
Love, Reichen

No ifs or buts, it takes an outsize character to put Vicky Pollard in the shade. But Dawn French manages it with ease.
The erstwhile Vicar of Dibley takes to tracksuit and trainers as she plays Vicky’s mother Shelley in a two-part festive edition of Little Britain.
And while she is several inches shorter than Vicky, played by Matt Lucas, she has the obnoxious expression down to a T.
Hypnotist Paul McKenna and comedian Peter Kay will also make guest appearances in the show, which sees the usual Little Britain characters causing trouble abroad.
Vicky’s mother turns up to bail her out when she ends up in a Thai jail. Last month Kate Moss scraped her hair back and appeared on stage as Vicky’s sister Katie for a Comic Relief event in London. Otherwise we have to wait for Matt and David to come to Sydney….

Operation Fundraiser has distributed £70,000 raised from Manchester Pride 2006 to LGBT and HIV good causes throughout Greater Manchester. David and I went to Manchest Pride this year in London (dont ever book with laterooms.com - they CANCELLED our apartment reservation PAID FOR with credit card WITH NO NOTICE). Despite finding ourselves in the haeart of Manchester on the busiest day of the year, with no accommodation, we did manage to find an (EXPENSIVE) apartment on Princes Street right opposite the gay village.
This years money raised at Pride has been distributed to help HIV and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender charities in Greater Manchester. Operation Fundraiser, the community fundraising venture and joint initiative between Lesbian and Gay Foundation and George House Trust raised a total of £70,000 at Manchester’s annual ten-day festival celebrating LGBT life in August 2006.
I highly recommend Manchester Pride if you are doing the EURO circuits next year. : source : Techstickle

WITH wigs and war paint in abundance, the deluded “laydee” Emily would have failed to get a look-in when Little Britain star Matt Lucas celebrated his marriage to his long-term lover.
Guests at the most extravagant gay nuptials since Sir Elton John wed David Furnish were asked to dress as pantomime characters for an exuberant reception at London’s sumptuous 400-year-old Banqueting House, in Whitehall.
As a small crowd outside cheered, a resplendent procession of Little Red Riding Hoods, moustachioed Captain Hooks, glittering Fairy Godmothers and Cinderella Buttonses arrived in taxis and a double-decker bus.
Lucas sparkled in an exotic blue and gold Ali Baba number, complete with a pink-and-blue feathered headdress. His partner, television producer Kevin McGee, was a perfect Prince Charming, sporting Adam Ant-style knee-high boots.
