New York Mayor Bloomberg wants to support and oppose same-sex marriage

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has staked out an odd compromise position in the gay-marriage debate: He wants to publicly support gay marriage, while challenging a court decision allowing it. Naturally, this ticks off everyone. Fellow Republicans are calling him a Democrat in disguise, and gays are calling him a coward. Why is Bloomberg looking for middle ground? Meanwhile, here’s a little more about Friday’s decision: A Manhattan judge ruled that the city clerk could not deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples because a state law prohibiting such unions is unconstitutional. State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan said the law violated the due process and equal protection clauses of the state and federal constitutions. She also compared the law to ones that once prohibited interracial marriages. Seattle Times
