California legislature makes gays and lesbians second class citizens
In a legislature controlled by the Democrats, California failed to pass Mark Leno's gay marriage legislation voting 37-36 against AB19, four votes shy of the majority needed for approval. Leno, normally reserved and upbeat, strained to keep his anger in check as Rebpulican Assemblyman Russ Bogh said the final tally was proof Californians don't want state-sanctioned same-sex marriage. Leno said, "If this body can't pass AB19, it should clarify its position and say we do believe that gay and lesbian couples are second-class citizens.
