Alberta's Ralph Klein drops same-sex marriage fight
Alberta's Ralph Klein drops same-sex marriage fight Alberta Premier Ralph Klein has given up, announcing that the province will comply with the federal gay marriage legislation making its way through the Senate and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, "much to our chagrin." Klein noted that Alberta will abandon the fight he admits it can't win and will focus attention instead on protecting critics of same-sex marriage, working towards legislation which would mean that religious leaders or marriage commissioners wouldn't have to perform same-sex marriages if they didn't want to. Alberta was one of only two provinces that banned same-sex marriages before the federal legislation was passed. [Date: 14-Jul-05 ]
