Gay communist couple marries in the Philippines

Two gay communist fighters in the southern Philippines fell in love and got married last week, a local newspaper reported yesterday. The wedding that made big news in the country brought two men known as "Ka" (comrade) Andres and "Ka" Jose (both pseudonyms in the New Peoples' Army which is the guerilla arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines) together. Imagine seeing the pair in the Philippine Daily Inquirer hand-in-hand under rifles held up for them by their fellow fighters and you'd have the image that the country has transfixed itself on. The picture pixelized their faces to hide their identities, but they were shown kissing behind a red flag bearing the movement's hammer-and-sickle insignia. Movement spokesman Gregorio Rosal told radio DZBB, "There were numerous debates within the Party. Many raised their eyebrows, including me." But recognition of gay men and women eventually won out.
