Arrested Nigerian gays disappear in custody
The Nigerian government Thursday launched an inquiry into the disappearance from police custody of two gay men charged under the country's "crimes against nature" law. The men, Ogudu Emmanuel and Odjegba Tevin, were taken to the Rumuokoro Police Station in January after acknowledging that they were partners. The men disappeared from the jail. Some say they escaped; some say they were murdered. Being gay is punishable in most of Nigeria by a 14-year prison sentence, except in the Sharia Code portions of the nation, where there is a death penalty.365Gay.com[Date: 18-Feb-05 ]

But she was getting married in a few months and "The L Word" piqued her curiosity so she decided to test the Sapphic seas for one week. "I started by calling Jen Sincero, author of 'The Straight Girl's Guide to Sleeping with Chicks.' Her advice? 'It's just like trying to meet a guy,' she cautioned. 'It's hard in the same way.'" She goes online to look for gay bars, rummages through Time Out magazine and the Village Voice, then calls her lesbian friends to see if they want to take her out. Then she makes a vow. Mian Carvin fights for visitation with girl she raised
Mian Carvin has only recently been allowed to see the 9-year-old girl she considers her daughter again. She and Page Britain were together six years before Britain gave birth to the girl, and Carvin was a stay-at-home mom until the girl was 5 and the pair broke up. Now Britain is pulling rank as birth mom, trying to block all Carvin's rights to see the girl. She says it's because Carvin is a lousy parent. At the Washington state Supreme Court yesterday, lawyers for both women argued the thorny issue of what makes someone a parent in a case that could have broad effect on child-custody rights in Washington. A bill in the Tennessee legislature would prohibit gay and lesbian couples from adopting children and make it illegal for us to become foster parents. "Our state already says that all of these things have nothing to do with sexual orientation. It should be judged on the best interest of the child," said Pastor Bob Galloway.
In New Mexico, Lea County Probate Judge Darrell Powell refused to marry a couple on Valentine's Day because although one of them looked like a woman and considers herself to be a woman she didn't have a doctor's certificate verifying the gender change as well as a new birth certificate.

Turkey: Gays and lesbians in Turkey believe the European Union has failed to lend them adequate support and expect Brussels to speak out in favor of their struggle for equal rights in the mainly Muslim nation, activists said yesterday. Ali Erol, a KAOS GL member gay group member, told a conference that the EU failed to react to discrimination against homosexuals as strongly as it does to other human rights abuses in the country. "When it concerns homosexuals, the issues are passed over in silence, maybe because there is no penalty" for homosexuality in Turkish law, Erol said.Australia: Western Australian Opposition Leader Colin Barnett is refusing to say whether he will lift the age of consent for gay sex to 18 if he wins the election. Gay and Lesbian Equality organized an election forum and no-one from the Liberal party turned up to defend their disgustingly homophobic polices.
Commercial radio station 2UE has been ordered to broadcast apologies for anti-gay comments made by presenters Steve Price and John Laws. The Administrative Decisions Tribunal found they'd vilified gay men by making negative comments about two gay participants on the Channel Nine program "The Block." The case was brought to the tribunal by gay activist Gary Burns. The Sydney based station will appeal.
UK: The Church of England is to grant partners of gay clergy who have registered under the Government's new civil partnership scheme the same pension rights as other clergy spouses. The disclosure, made at the General Synod last night, could prove an embarrassment to the bishops because sexually active gay people are theoretically barred from the priesthood.
Police in London hope victims of a man who used gay dating websites to meet people and rob them of their credit cards will come forward.
Members of the Federation of Gay Games and the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association, as well as European groups representing a range of sports from football to aquatics, met in London last weekend to mend fences.
USA: The Washington state House passed a gay rights bill that will prohibit employment, housing and insurance discrimination. The bill has passed the house before and was first introduced there nearly 30 years ago. The bill now goes to the Senate where it has routinely died in the past, although Democrats are in control this time around.

Officer Charles Broshous resigns over photos of nearly naked men
Officer Charles Broshous resigned after 100 photos he had taken of barely clad men were found in his home in Colorado Springs. A gay dancer reported to police that he had been arrested and was forced to strip to a satin leopard G-string while Officer Broshous photographed him. Investigating detective Derek Graham said, "The fact that photographs would be taken of suspects, all of whom were of the same age group and athletic build with their shirts off, indicated that Officer Broshous was intentionally contacting individuals sharing these characteristics in order to photograph them.'' It seems Broshous issued an unusually high number of tickets for underage drinking where he'd order offenders to remove their shirts, saying he was looking for tattoos.News 4 Colorado[Date: 15-Feb-05 ]

Teen says crossdresser raped her; he says he only peed
In Leeds, a UK jury heard the testimony of a teenage girl, who said she was raped by a man dressed as a woman who followed her in the early morning hours. The 16-year-old said she was approached and asked the time by a woman with long blonde hair who later grabbed her, dragged her into an alley and raped her. Gary Atack was arrested and women's clothing was found in his home. He admitted he had been out that night dressed as a woman, but said he didn't sexually assault anybody. Atack later explained he got turned on by people urinating in front of each other and on the night in question he urinated in front of the girl. The home search turned up other interesting items, notably his urine-stained underwear and several DVDs of women urinating.Yorkshire Today [Date: 15-Feb-05 ]
